What Kihachiro Onitsuka didn’t know in 1949, when he started sewing shoes in his living room, was that he was making a whole lot more than a shoe. He was giving his native Kobe, Japan, optimism and purpose. You see, Mr. Onitsuka believe that an active lifestyle was key to a strong mind, a strong heart and a strong community. So with some tough rubber and cotton laces, he set out to make sure “a good pair of athletic shoes sat at every door stoop.” A philosophy he soon shared with the rest of the world.
